
The Himalayan Grassroots Women’s Natural Resource Management Association (HIMAWANTI) organized a 3 days capacity development program for the elected women mayors/presidents, deputy mayors/president in Dhulikhel in collaboration with RECOFTC Nepal. It is a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental organization dedicated to strengthening women in sustainable natural resource management across different districts of Nepal. It aims to promote solidarity among women at the grassroot level to increase their access on natural resources as well as to ensure the equitable distribution and the benefits accruing from them. It offers women the opportunities to discuss resource management policies and practices, to share their respective situations, and to grow appropriate strategies.

RECOFTC’s representatives Dr. Kalpana Giri and Mr. Shambhu Dangal highlighted on the scope of such programs and major areas of support for coming days. Mayors/Presidents and Deputy Mayors/President representing 7 districts across the country have been participating in the program. The main aim of the program is to empower women leader to bring the transformative changes in their municipalities. Eastern Research Institute of Positive Science (ERIPS) provided technical support to facilitate on Appreciative Inquiry to Flourish Leadership Capacity of Women Leaders in first day of the program.

Such programs help to develop new thinking required to lead the municipalities said Ms. Krishna Kushma Tharu, one of the participants from Thakurbaba Municipality Bardiya. The program is focused to discuss on ways to develop the effective leadership strategy of women leaders in the changed context. “This program has been giving learning opportunities from the experience sharing” said Laxmi Paudel, the deputy president of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality of Sindupalchowk. The young and energetic women leaders have immense potential to transfer the current political, economic and social structures of the country and create new social structure based on equity and social justice. Such capacity development program will empower women leaders to unleash their positive potential said Shambhu Dhangal. This is a kick off program and RECOFTC will support this for next three years as per the scope, Mr. Dangal further added.
